Superman and What It Means To Be Human

Man Of Steel

Recently I watched the new superman movie, I have always been a big Superman fan and even more so, a Man of Steel fan. Should the world stand against that film, then I will stand against the world. I appreciated how Snyder tried to create his own vision, I found the idea of a superman who was a little more weary, someone who has yet to become the "Super" part of Superman. Lets not forget that Clark in Man of Steel is rather humanized, he is unsure of himself, his place and whether he truly belongs with other people. He goes to a priest to seek guidance. All this laid groundwork for what I believed could have been the transformation Superman needed to turn from a godly being, to someone you would give a free falafel to.

The issues people had with the final act or climax of the film, I thought weren't really applicable. I enjoyed how it showed what 2 gods fighting on earth would be like, the sense of scale was incredible and I loved that fight. I mean who wouldn't, it was super fucking cool.

Superman

Now this obviously isn't a review of Man of Steel, the film had flaws (plenty even), but I was just pointing out the aspects I enjoyed and worked for me. I went into Superman feeling hopeful and excited to see what James Gunn could do (he did crush all 3 guardians movies) and I am glad to say that I left a happy man. For the first time in my life, we got a superman who finally feels like your friend, a superman who isn't just defined by his godly abilities. We see Clark fail and most importantly, he is helped by friends and even strangers. This isn't a superman who descends from the sky like a god, he is someone who would pick kids up and jokes with them. It is precisely because that he tries so hard to strive for his ideals of a world that is kind and loving that in spite of him being an alien, he is just as human as the rest of us. I mean anyone who has seen the final scene between him and Luthor knows what I am talking about.

What is the point?

Now for all my ramblings beforehand, I suppose I just wanted to say that we finally have a Superman who perfectly embodies a hopeful ideal - an All-Star Superman you could say. Walking out of that movie I never felt more hopeful and happy (the smile was incredibly wide). Thanks for reading... well whatever this is, also make sure to watch Superman, I really think its a great film - 8.7/10.
